Question One

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products ?

Slide 3

Inspiration for my film

The main inspiration for my film was the “Nostalgia Critic Halloween special” in which a man get’s attacked by a killer teddy bear.

Like my short film this video is in the genre of dark comedy. But my film is more circled around the theme of madness rather than horror.

The way in which the teddy bear is moved manually is also an aspect that I wanted to incorporate in my film.

I also used dark lighting in certain scenes in my film. However I used dark lighting more towards the end of my film which reflects the character’s darkening mood

Slide 4

Inspiration for my film: Shots

Image 1: I wished to use a shot like this because it can create a sense of dark tension for my films climax.

Image 2: I used a shot similar to this one in my film. With a slight low angle shot on the subject to show power.

Slide 5

Inspirational shots i used

Image 1: You can see in that this shot is similar to one of the shots used in the nostalgia critic video, however unlike the NS video the camera is angled lower to show the subject’s power more profoundly.

Image 2: For this shot I used a point of view shot instead of the close up used in the similar shot from the nostalgia critic video. I did this because by using by using a point of view a sense of intimacy is created between the character and viewer as you experience this madness with the character.

Slide 6

Other shots I used

Image 1: As the camera pans around the room the camera settles on this image of the human character crying next to a teddy, this is used to give a comical outlook of the human’s depression.

Image 2: This is one of the crucial points of my film, When the main character descends into madness, this is shown by his quick change in facial expression, from a confused and scared look to a slightly creepy and evil grin.

Slide 7

(Continuing from slide 6)

Image 1: This is one of the scenes in which I have used dark lighting; this is to represent the character’s darker and brooding mood. Since I used a mid shot we can see light bleeding from outside his room, it represents the idea that he is cut off from the rest of this strange world.

Image 2: This is the first shot of my film, I shot it from I high angle because I wanted to create a sense of vulnerability while the main character is sleeping.

Slide 8

Title and ending

Clip 1: I chose to use a simple title for my film with the white text fading in and out. I chose to do it this way because the text can be viewed easily and by using a simple black and white format the audience is unsure about what to expect.

Clip 2: Like the beginning title, the ending title is also simple by using the same black background and fade in effect for the text, however the text is now red to represent the fact that the main character has committed murder.

Slide 9

Inspiration for my music

I believed the music for my film was very important since it would help to create a dark atmosphere throughout my short film. The piece of music that I took most of my inspiration from was ‘Moonlight sonata movement 1 by Beethoven.

This is the piece of music I created for my film:

Slide 10

Inspiration for my poster

This poster from the Dark Knight was one of the posters I used in my textual analysis to find ideas for my own poster. I was intrigued by the bold colors and images used which is something that I wanted to incorporate in my poster. Another aspect that I wanted to use was the posing of the joker. Which creates a sense of mystery since you can’t see his face.

Slide 11

My poster

For my poster I used a similar pose for my main character to again create a sense of mystery, but this pose also reflects the fact that in my film the main character is unsure about who he is. Like the Dark Knight poster, in mine I used a background that reflects the film through image. But my background is more subtle and strange which reflects the difference in genre. Although I kept the positioning of the title the same as most film posters, I changed the position of the most of the other aspects because of the more length ways layout. Since my project is a short film, I believed that it would be shown at a film festival or show case of some kind so instead of showing distributer information I show information about the ‘London Film festival’ where my film would be viewed. Like the Dark Knight I used bold colors to catch the potential viewer’s eye.

Slide 12

Inspiration for my Radio Trailer

From my textual analysis of these radio adverts, established that a combination of humor and musical backing helps to make the advert effective in it’s selling point. Lexis for example used soothing music to imply safety and reliability. The humor from the HMV advert comes from the twist on the famous “top dog” catch phrase by using a “talking dog”.

Slide 13

My radio Trailer

I believe that I used the non digetic piano music well to attract the listener’s attention and like in the lexis advert I used a deeper toned and well spoken narrative voice, to show the darker edge to the film. I also used a pause in the music to emphasize the line “and your mother is a stuffed animal” to contrast the darker tone of the advert.

Slide 14

Question 2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Slide 15

How my products achieve their purposes

I believe that the combination of my film and my ancillary is very effective since they are very reflective of each other in how they advertise each other and reveal the crucial themes in the film

For example: The piano music used in the film is also used in the radio trailer to create a similar dark atmosphere to the trailer.

Since my short film is independently made both the trailer and poster have to fulfill their purpose of advertisement effectively for my film to be a success.

Both the trailer and the poster advertise the London film festival effectively, the poster simply shows where the film is being shown while the trailer goes into greater detail informing the viewer about where the film festival is taking place. However the poster also displays a website so viewers can find out more about the London film festival. The radio trailer also uses humor to associate itself with a comedy. This helps the radio trailer fulfill it’s purpose of advertisement.

Slide 16

Question 3

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Slide 17

My questionnaire

Slide 18

The results

From these results I learnt that although my short film may not appeal to a majority of the public, however i would still be able to attract and entertain a good amount of people since around 24/50 of the people I asked enjoyed darker and edgier comedies and 40/50 would attend a film festival. The trailer and the poster could still be reasonably successful since 36/50 of the people I asked listen to the radio on a regular basis.

Slide 19

Question 4

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Slide 20

Technologies used for the final products

I decided to use I-movie because it is very popular for amateur and professional film makers. It was very easy to use and I found it quite easy to edit my film and add necessary effects to make my film as well as it could be. Some of the effects I used in my film were mainly transitional video effects such as fade in, fade out, wash in and wash out to make the transitions more smooth and dream like. With it’s audio adjustment option I was able to cut out most of the background noise to give my film a cleaner sound and make sure that the audio levels were even.

Slide 21

Poster

When creating and editing my poster I decided to use Photoshop. I chose Photoshop because it offers a vast range of editing techniques to make a product look professional.

Text and image: out side shadow- to give a deeper 3D effect

Tag line: a lighting outline to make it more visible

Main image: increased the opacity, create a dreamy effect

Title: a texture effect and light brown colour to associate it with theme of teddy bears

Background: a patterned grey background to contrast the bright colours of the title and image.

Background image: simply copied and repeated the image to create a patterned effect. This shows that the character is alone in a world of teddy bears. I also changed opacity for the dreamy effect.

Slide 22

Radio trailer

To record my trailer and the music to play in the background, i used the zoom handy recorder which was very easy to use and provided a very good sound quality which was what I wanted in order to create a professional sounding radio trailer.

When editing my trailer i used garage band. With it’s multi track system i was able to line the two recordings up together effectively.

Slide 23

Technologies used for planning

For the planning I used the internet to conduct the research needed to make my film and gather ideas. Websites such as youtube, radioville and google images provided the media for my textual analysis while I used microsoft excel to chart up my audience feedback which really helped in the later stages of planning when I would make a final decision regarding what I was going to do for my products.

Slide 24

Technologies used for the evaluation

For the evaluation i have used Microsoft Powerpoint, this is because with Powerpoint it is very easy to use links to different sites for my examples. It’s also easy to add video, audio and image examples of my products. Plus with it’s many options to adjust the visual aspect of the presentation, it’s very easy to make your presentation visually pleasing.

Poster draft

In order to create my poster i will have to edit the images and fonts i wish to use so my poster can look as attractive and professional as possible.

For the first draft of my poster i wanted to reflect my film to a certain extent without giving away too much, this way the reader. For example like in the Dark knight poster the main character is facing away from the viewer. This is to create a sense of suspense as the viewer wonders what the character looks like. Like all of the posters i analyzed i used a tag line in my poster however in this draft i wasn't pleased with the positioning since due to it's similar size, font type and color the tag line sticks out just as much as as the film title does which was not what i wanted to achieve. I was also not too fond of the background on this draft, i first believed that a backdrop of trees would be a good idea however, it's too much for the viewer to take in due to the texture effects i added to it with photoshop. Also the positioning is wrong since the tree is blocked by the main character, and if the image of the main character was moved to the side of tree the poster would look unbalanced.
For the images of the Teddy bears i used photoshop to erase the background. However i decided not to use the full images of the teddy bears in my final design because it implies that the teddy bears have leading roles in the film in stead of being in the background.
I decided to change the font of the text in my poster due to it's style which is more associated with romanticaly linked films rather than dark comedys and i believed that it didn't really blend with the rest of the poster.
