textual analysis: Film

Nostalgia critic Halloween special

Although this video is in the comedy/spoof genre, the use of a teddy bear and the interaction between a human and a teddy bear is very well used in this video and is a good example of it's genre and what want to achieve.

The effect used at "0:58" is achieved through the use of stop animation, although i won't use stop animation throughout my film since it would be hard for interaction between the person and the teddy. In light of this, i may use stop animation for close ups and extreme close ups of the teddy bears or for scenes in which there are only teddies.

In this video the speech made by the teddy bear is recorded later and added during the editing process. Doing it this way means that the audio quality is a better. The music used at "0:50-1:34" is quite dark and atmospheric; although this is more reflective of horror films, i still wish to use similar music in my film in order to set the theme and like "nostalgia critic Halloween special" use the music to create a dark and atmospheric feel to my film. There also non digetic sound effects used this video throughout, i will use applications such as garage band to find suitable sound effects or i could make them myself through use of a microphone.

The lighting during this video is generally very dark since is replicating the stereotypes of a horror film. Although my video will be a black comedy, i still wish to use the dark lighting to create the atmospheric mood i want.

Beethoven's moonlight sonata movement 1
Since the music in my short film is very important in setting the theme and feel of the film, i have decided to take influence from a very beautiful piece of piano music called "Moonlight sonata movement 1" Since this piece is in sonata form it has three sections: the exposition, the development and the recapitulation (beginning, middle and end) and this form embodies the form of a story and as the "story" develops and changes, so does the music through a series of key changes which create a very dark yet beautiful piece of music. There are also examples of chromaticism (when the piece uses notes outside of the set key), and modulation to show when each section starts and finishes. I wish to use these aspects of "Moonlight sonata" in my piece of music so i can emphasize the darker tones of my film (eg. lighting).

The League of Gentlemen

The league of gentlemen is a comedy sketch group who specialize in dark comedy. I chose to take inspiration from this sketch because it is very dark and is often quite grotesque in terms of it's characters. The dark lighting that is used throughout this sketch reflects the dark humor and is an aspect i wish to use in my short film. In terms of it's camera angles there are quite a lot of close ups used in this sketch on the main character in order to emphasize his slightly grotesque appearance and his facial expressions which create a lot of the humor. The subject matter to which this sketch derives it's humor from is also dark (the subject of death, and abduction). I wish to derive some of my humor partially from the subject of death but also the subject of insanity which is touched upon in this sketch through the main characters obvious and comic) insanity.
